Zanzibar Tales – Full Audio Book – by George W. Bateman – African Journey Stories

Zanzibar Tales – Complete Audio Book – by George W. Bateman – African Journey Stories
– Summary excerpt (written by the writer in 1901) – Thirty many years in the past Central Africa was what folks who are fond of airing their understanding would get in touch with a terra incognita. To-day its basic characteristics are fairly effectively known. Then, as now, the little island of Zanzibar, located just south of the equator, on the east coast, was the starting spot of all expeditions into the interior, and Unguja (pronounced Oon-goo’jah), the large town of that island, the place exactly where the preparations for plunging into the unknown have been made.

At that time period these expeditions consisted, almost with no exception,
of caravans loaded with beads and cotton cloth, which had been exchanged
amid the inland tribes for elephants’ tusks and slaves–for Unguja
boasted the only, and the final, open slave-market place in the globe then.

If you have read any accounts of journey in Africa, you will know that travelers by no means mention animals of any sort that are gifted with the faculty of speech, or gazelles that are overseers for native princes, or hares that eat flesh. No, without a doubt only the native-born know of these and, judging by the immense and quick strides civilization is generating in these components, it will not be long prior to this kind of superb specimens of zoölogy will be as extinct as the ichthyosaurus, dinornis, and other poor creatures who never dreamed of the awful names that would be applied to them when they had been too extended dead to present their resentment. As to the truth of these tales, I can only say that they have been informed to me, in Zanzibar, by negroes whose ancestors informed them to them, who had obtained them from their ancestors, and so back so that the praise for their accuracy, or the blame for their falsity, lies with the 1st ancestor who set them going.

You could think uncivilized negroes are pretty ignorant people, but the white man who is supposed to have initial advised the story of “The Property that Jack Constructed” was a mighty poor genius in contrast with the unknown originator of “Goso, the Teacher,” who found even inanimate factors that had been endowed with speech, which the pupils readily understood and were not astonished to hear although “Puss in Boots” was not 1-half so clever as the gazelle that ran things for Haamdaanee. It would be a significant activity to rattle off “Goso” as you do “The Home that Jack Created.” (by the writer – George W. Bateman – 1901)

More about the African island of Zanzibar:

Zanzibar (zænzɨbɑr from Arabic: زنجبار‎ Zanjibār, from Persian: زنگبار‎ Zangibār “Coast of Blacks” zangi [black-skinned] + bār [coast]) is a semi-autonomous component of Tanzania, in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometres (sixteen–31 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of several little islands and two large ones: Unguja (the primary island, referred to informally as Zanzibar), and Pemba.

The capital of Zanzibar, found on the island of Unguja, is Zanzibar City. Its historic center, recognized as Stone Town, is a Globe Heritage Website and is claimed to be the only working ancient town in East Africa.

Zanzibar’s major industries are spices, raffia, and tourism. In distinct, the islands create cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. For this purpose, the islands, with each other with Tanzania’s Mafia Island, are at times named the Spice Islands (a phrase also associated with the Maluku Islands in Indonesia). Zanzibar is the home of the endemic Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey, the Zanzibar Servaline Genet, and the (possibly extinct) Zanzibar Leopard.
