There are so many stories and traditions surrounding the offering of presents at Christmas, as several as there are countries in the globe. Via a Tiny Little one, God comes to us to carry out the ideal in us. Who can resist a Little one, no less the Little one Jesus?

Christmas in Brooklyn

For those of you who do not know our story, Bob was born in the Bronx and I in Brooklyn. We have been city young children who lived in a modest town named a community. Customs from distinct components of the globe filled and permeated our small planet. Often a community grew to become like a tiny nation unto itself, as members of families and pals from the “outdated country” moved shut to each other. My loved ones and most of the people on our block have been from Sicily, Italy. Several of our neighbors did not even know the English language, so out of necessity we had been a multi-lingual society. Our large loved ones traditions created us a single. Christmas, like all holidays and Feast Days was a neighborhood issue, a shared encounter, what with doors open, the fragrance of sauce and pizza filling the air, the freshly baked Italian cookies on a plate by an open door for a single to carry property to share with the family members. We had been really poor, but I by no means felt bad. I often felt like a princess in great wonderland. Christmas in my life was filled with, you may possibly say, two days of present offering and receiving. I opened gifts on the morning of Christmas and yet again on the Feast of the Epiphany. My parents striving to be American, adopted all the customs of their new land and gifts were positioned beneath the tree, Christmas Eve. My grandmother held the customs of her folks and exchanged gift on the Feast of the Epiphany.

Early in the evening, Christmas Eve, we have been informed we had to go to sleep or Santa Claus would not stop at our apartment and carry us gifts. I by no means questioned why the Santa who visited us, early in the evening, looked distinct each and every yr. I believed in Santa Claus and that was enough for me. Now, a single of my brothers, a sophisticated giant, who was tall whilst I was petite, with 6 years on me, made the decision he would burst my balloon and expose Santa Claus as a myth. Needless to say, this brought about considerably wailing and torrents of tears in its wake. My mom, who plainly adored him, gently challenged him, “Oh, you don’t believe in Santa Claus. Allow us see what he brings you!” Now, despite the fact that there was no question about my mother’s open affection and preference toward her minor boy, a lesson had to be offered and brother acquired coal in his stocking and practically nothing else. Needless to say, the subject of Santa was in no way brought up once again.

I by no means questioned why my Nana (grandmother) brought presents on the twelfth day of Christmas, the sixth day of January, rather than on Christmas Day. No 1 told me about the Magi they acquired shoved out of the way by Christmas Trees and Santa Claus coming down the chimney bearing presents in his sack. Though in our cold-water flat, we had only a coal stove in the kitchen to warm us in the daytime and a kerosene space heater in the front area to supply heat in the bedrooms in the evening, I in no way questioned which chimney he was going to climb down.

To people of us who grew up in the North, Christmas and snow have been synonymous. How grand is God the Father for putting the Christmas season in our midst amid the gloom of winter. We speak of Spring as new beginnings and it is, specifically with the new hope of Easter. But the new beginnings started at Christmas with the Child Jesus. Our Hope was born into the world. Do you ever meditate on why God chose to come as a Tiny Little one into the planet? Why not a grown Man? What was God striving to inform us? Was the Omnipotent God showing us the way, through His Son Who is the Way, the Reality and the Life, that the way to know eternal happiness is in getting to be as innocent and vulnerable as a small kid completely dependent on the Father’s Will?
