Danville, Va. (March 28) – Carroll Shelby, star race driver of the 50s, originator of the legendary Cobra and legend in sports automobile racing, will return to the scene of 1 of his most considerable wins – Virginia International Raceway for the June 8–10 Heacock Classic Gold Cup Historic Races.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the track’s opening, in August, 1957, the Gold Cup reunites Shelby with the track and his original Maserati 450S in which he captured the opening weekend’s feature race, a twenty–lap race for “Sports” classed automobiles. Shelby won the preliminary race for the group, then went on to dominate the feature race, besting a pair of Jaguar D–types and an assortment of other racers.

Following the race, in heat nearing one hundred degrees, Shelby commented that “One lap at VIR is like a hundred at Watkins Glen.” Shelby then went on to co–drive an Aston Martin DBR1 with Roy Salvadori in winning the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans before a forced retirement due to a heart ailment that led to a transplant in 1990.

VIR Co–Owner Harvey Siegel mentioned: “We had been thrilled that Carroll Shelby joined us as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of VIR. He is a single of the true legends of the sport and an integral element of VIR’s early history.”

  1. There is a little girl that just donated all of her money for the Sevier County ,Tennessee animals affected by the wild fires. Don’t know her but just read the article. Maybe someone can assist in getting her a horse for her caring and devotion for doing the right thing? Go to Sevier County Humane Society face book and her story and pic is on there. Thanks

  3. Amazing story! This is absolutely so inspirational. I was deciding to do barrel racing or continue show jumping. But seeing this, I’m going barrels for sure. She was even faster then Fallon Taylor. She is absolutely amazing!!!! I’m speechless

  4. In barrel racing there is a fine line between good horsemanship and abuse. Star fishing, esp. with spurs should be banned!
