Letter from PETA to Guinness Book of Planet Records

April 20, 2009

Craig Glenday
Editor in Chief
Guinness World Records Ltd.

Dear Mr. Glenday,

On behalf of Individuals for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and our a lot more
than 2 million members and supporters worldwide, I am writing regarding the
upcoming try by fast-meals giant KFC to set the record for the largest group
“chicken dance” at Talladega Superspeedway. In the previous, Guinness has rightly
stated that it will “not accept records primarily based on the killing or harming of animals.”
I urge you to go a step further and refuse to accept any records from organizations
that have refused to adopt even modest humane reforms that would minimize the
needless suffering of animals killed for their quick-meals restaurants.

Video footage, which KFC executives have noticed and which has been shown on
television all over the U.S., shows KFC’s suppliers forcing birds into metal
shackles, frequently breaking their wings and legs. A lot of are nonetheless alive when they are
dragged through tanks of scalding-hot water. Workers at a KFC “Supplier of the
Year” have been documented stomping on live birds, spitting tobacco into their eyes,
and spray painting their faces. KFC abuses chickens in techniques that could warrant
felony cruelty-to-animals charges if dogs or cats had been the victims. The business
has carried out nothing to stop the worst abuses of chickens, in spite of the availability of a
far significantly less cruel slaughter approach that is cost-efficient. In reality, five of KFC’s animal
welfare advisors resigned out of aggravation with KFC’s utter lack of progress.

The Guinness Book of Planet Records celebrates real achievement—it should not
be employed to publicize stunts by cruel, unethical firms such as KFC. Please
get in touch with me at 000-000-0000 or XXX@XXX.XXX to go over this problem additional.

Thank you for your consideration.

Quite actually yours,

Ingrid E. Newkirk

Letter from Guinness Book of Globe Records to PETA

Men and women for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

Ms. Ingrid E. Newkirk,

We at Guinness have received your letter concerning PETA’s complaints about KFC’s try to set a globe record for the largest group chicken dance this Sunday at Talladega, home of the Aaron’s 499 race. If there is a single issue that Guinness Globe Records prides itself on, it is propriety. Your plea has not fallen on deaf ears.

In addition to en-drunkening the Irish, and publishing books that line toilet tanks worldwide, Guinness is identified for 1 factor and that one particular point is respect for animals.

Who can deny that worldwide opinion of barnyard athleticism was not raised to new heights when our organization dutifully recorded the world’s highest jump by a pig? Were not goats taken more seriously right after we publicized the record-setting width of &quotUncle Sam’s&quot longest domestic goat horns (52 inches)? Did we not shine a vibrant beacon of hope for harmony inside the animal kingdom when we documented the oldest kinkajou living in captivity, providing proof to the world that humans and huggy bears can coexist in peace?

Some might recommend that your letter was a waste of time and will not be taken seriously by folks who were present to see the most sheep shorn in eight hours. To the contrary, we consider your letter will achieve much good. By attempting to stop individuals from flapping their arms and kicking their feet to an oom-pah song in a group setting, we think that we can prevent the inhumane practices your organization alleges that KFC undertakes.

Sad to say, KFC could proceed with this promotion, as is its proper. But if because of our actions here even just one particular person at a wedding someplace pauses throughout the bridge of the song – the element normally reserved for dancers to move about like airplanes (as if chickens could fly!) – then will not we have created a difference?

It is in the spirit of the chicken dance, odious as we locate the act, that we link arms with PETA and swing with you in the name of animal justice. And may our actions repeat themselves more quickly and faster, and our battle against injustice accelerate at a dizzying pace, till all animal cruelty comes to a sudden, comprehensive and unexpected stop.

Sincerely,

Craig Glenday
Editor-In-Chief of Guinness Globe Records
