&quotLittle Red Riding Hood&quot, also known as &quotLittle Red Cap&quot or simply &quotRed Riding Hood&quot, is a French and later European fairy tale about a young girl and a Large Bad Wolf. The story has been changed considerably in its history and subject to several contemporary adaptations and readings. The story was first published by Charles Perrault.

The origins of the Tiny Red Riding Hood story can be traced to versions from various European nations and more than likely preceding the 17th century, of which numerous exist, some drastically distinct from the at present known, Grimms-inspired version. It was told by French peasants in the 10th century. In Italy, the Small Red Riding Hood was told by peasants in 14th century, exactly where a quantity of versions exist, including La finta nonna (The False Grandmother). It has also been called &quotThe Story of Grandmother&quot. It is also possible that this early tale has roots in extremely related Oriental tales (e.g. &quotGrandaunt Tiger&quot).
These early variations of the tale differ from the at present recognized version in several ways. The antagonist is not usually a wolf, but at times an ogre or a ‘bzou’ (werewolf), producing these tales relevant to the werewolf-trials (similar to witch trials) of the time (e.g. the trial of Peter Stumpp). The wolf normally leaves the grandmother’s blood and meat for the girl to eat, who then unwittingly cannibalizes her own grandmother. In addition, the wolf was also recognized to ask her to remove her clothes and toss it into the fire. In some versions, the wolf eats the girl right after she gets into bed with him, and the story ends there. In other individuals, she sees by means of his disguise and tries to escape, complaining to her &quotgrandmother&quot that she wants to defecate and would not wish to do so in the bed. The wolf reluctantly lets her go, tied to a piece of string so she does not get away. Nonetheless, the girl slips the string more than some thing else and runs off.
In these stories she escapes with no assist from any male or older female figure, instead making use of her personal cunning. At times, although a lot more hardly ever, the red hood is even non-existent.
